The crazy thing is, I had actually relapsed, right?

I had been sober for a while and had relapsed.

And now I didn't know they were gonna drug test me this day.

Speaker A:

And we go in there, and they're like, yeah, you need to drug test so you can get in to basically be eligible for probation, get into drug court and shit.

Speaker A:

And I was like, oh, shit.

Speaker A:

I'm thinking I'm going to jail today.

Speaker A:

But my lawyers, and even the lawyer, he's like, I ain't gonna lie, dude.

Speaker A:

You're fucked.

Speaker A:

Those are the exact words.

Speaker A:

He's like, you're fucked, dude.

Speaker A:

I was like, what?

Speaker A:

Like, huh?

Speaker A:

You supposed to be my faith.

I was supposed to have faith.

It was a long day.

I came straight from cutting hair, you know, I mean, I was in the shop all day.

Speaker A:

Came straight here.

I did.

I was late, bro.

I was trying my hardest, bro, but, you know, they was trying to get in.

Speaker A:

I squeezed a couple people, and they had some money, so, you know, can't.

Speaker C:

Say none of that.

That's always comes first.

No problem.

But, bro, like, going into barbering, you know, we want to hear more about kind of what got you into it.

Speaker B:

Your past, your background, growing up, everything like that.

Speaker A:

Hell, yeah.

So I used to always try to cut my mom here when I was a little kid.

Speaker A:

I don't know why.

Speaker A:

Like, I look back at it now, but I guess I liked it back then, right?

Speaker A:

Like, so she used.

Speaker A:

One time I accidentally cut it with real scissors.

Speaker A:

So she got me to, like, the plastic ones, and she was like, let me fake cut her hair.

Speaker A:

And then I started, like.

Speaker A:

I remember I would, like, line myself up with, like, a big, big razor after, but I'd have it hella short, like a one.

Speaker A:

And then you could line it up like that.

Speaker A:

I see my cousins do it.

Speaker A:

So I started doing that.

Speaker A:

And then we had.

Speaker A:

We had moved to.

Speaker A:

To Concord from out this way, right?

Speaker A:

And there was no barber shops out there that I knew of.

Speaker A:

So for a while, I was going to this one Chinese lady, and.

Speaker A:

But the crazy thing is, she knew how to do lineups.

Speaker A:

Like, she used to do, like, designs, and the lineups was cool.

Speaker A:

It was.

Speaker A:

It was cool.

Speaker A:

But eventually, this dude named tj, that's my uncle right there.

Speaker A:

Shout out to tj.

Speaker A:

He from.

Speaker A:

He from Oakland, actually.

Speaker A:

But he ended up.

Speaker A:

When I was in sixth grade, he ended up opening the shop out there.

Speaker A:

And there was other barbershops around at the time, but I don't really like them.

Speaker A:

I don't like the way they cut my hair.

Speaker A:

But he opened it, and I went there, and he knew how to do everything I wanted.

Speaker A:

Like, he used to do, like, the Bay Bridge in the back of my head, and.

Speaker A:

And I was like, 12 when I first started going there.

Speaker A:

And then, you know, he knew all my folks, my mom, my dad, everybody.

Speaker A:

So my mom used to drop me off there.

Speaker A:

I used to hang out there.

Speaker A:

You know, on Saturdays.

Speaker A:

There's hella people there.

Speaker A:

You gonna get stuck there for, like, four hours, probably, and my mom gonna go.

Speaker A:

Go do errands, and so she's not really tripping.

Speaker A:

So she, like.

Speaker A:

You know, moms back then, they liked it.

Speaker A:

urs just because this is like:

Speaker A:

And then eventually, as I got older, you know, I'm walking.

Speaker A:

I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm not going home after school.

Speaker A:

I'm like, you know, like freshman, sophomore year, I'm going to the barbershop.

Speaker A:

I'm just hanging out.

Speaker A:

They let me smoke weed with them now, shoot dice with them.

Speaker A:

All the fun, you know, and it gets a point.

Speaker A:

I'm selling a weed, too, so it's cool.

Speaker A:

It's the place to be.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

And I just hung out there a lot that actually saw.

Speaker A:

And then in the.

Speaker A:

When I was like, 16, I had been lining myself.

Speaker A:

I had got a pair of peanuts.

Speaker A:

Like, you know what the wall peanuts is?

Speaker A:

The little white ones.

Speaker A:

You know what I'm talking about?

Speaker A:

Y' all seen them?

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker A:

I had a pair of them, and I was lining myself up, and my partners used to be like, that look fake cool and that.

Speaker A:

You know, we used to be wanting to buy weed, and so their moms used to give them, like, 30, 20.

Speaker A:

Like, back then, haircuts was cheaper for a haircut.

Speaker A:

They'd be like, hey, just cut my hair and it will buy weed with the money.

Speaker A:

And I'm like, it's good.

Speaker A:

And that's what we used to do.

Speaker A:

And then.

Speaker A:

So that's kind of how it started.

Speaker A:

And then my barber would see them when they come in, they'd be like, hey, hey, that's kind of cool, Mike.

Speaker A:

Like, Mike, that's cool.

Speaker A:

That's not that bad.

Speaker A:

Like, you might as well start doing this.

Speaker A:

And then he had gave me a pair of, like, old rusty ass clippers.

Speaker A:

And that was my first pair of real clippers, other than like some Walmart joints or something like that.

Speaker A:

But they worked.

Speaker A:

And I started.

Speaker A:

That's when I started messing around.

Speaker A:

And then eventually I ended up going to barber school later on and all that.

Speaker A:

And then that's.

Speaker A:

There's a whole more story to that too.

Speaker A:

That's crazy, man.

It's like you going out to barber school and you, like, taking that step to be like, all right, I'm ready gonna.

Speaker D:

I'm gonna be ready to pretty much just get this.

Speaker D:

Get it going, get it popping, you know?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

The crazy thing is the.

Speaker A:

For.

Speaker A:

I went to barter school twice.

Speaker A:

I wasn't ready.

Speaker A:

Like, you talking about your first.

Speaker A:

I wasn't ready at all, bro.

Speaker B:

No, talk more about that.

Speaker B:

Why weren't you ready?

Speaker D:

Most people be getting.

Speaker D:

Getting a barber school after they're done, they're ready to, like, you know, so look, open up their shop, check it out.

Speaker A:

So look what happened.

Speaker A:

So, like I said, I have been doing it for hobby and stuff.

Speaker A:

Like how I was telling y' all.

Speaker A:

So When I was 19, I went to jail for my first time.

Speaker A:

And when I had got out, I hadn't had a job yet, and I hadn't been back to school since I had already dropped out of high school.

Speaker A:

I had got a ged, but so my mom and my PO at the time, they're like, look, my mom like, either you gonna get a job or you gonna go to school or you gonna get out.

Speaker A:

And my PO like, either you gonna get a job, you gonna go to school, or else, like, we gonna take your ass back to jail.

Speaker A:

And I was like, all right.

Speaker A:

And then so I was like, I ain't gonna get no job.

Speaker A:

I was like, I don't want no job.

Speaker A:

So I was like.

Speaker A:

And, you know, I'm still in the streets and shit.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, I go to school.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, but I'm gonna go to barber school.

Speaker A:

So I go.

Speaker A:

I make it like seven months through.

Speaker A:

So, yeah, like, seven months, I was like, that's like more than halfway.

Speaker A:

Damn near.

Speaker A:

And I ended up getting arrested again.

Speaker A:

And I get dropped from the class or whatever, right?

Speaker A:

And I ended up going back Five years later and going back to barber school again.

Speaker A:

And that was after, you know, because when I got out, everybody was like, oh, you gonna go back to school?

Speaker A:

I'm like, nah, that I'm gonna just keep running the streets and.

Speaker A:

And I actually ended up the thing that made me go back for the second time.

Speaker A:

During COVID I had caught a case.

Speaker A:

I actually just got a probation for it.

Speaker A:

I just finished probation like a couple weeks ago.

Speaker A:

Really appreciate you.

I thought I never gonna get off, but so I ended up catching that case, right?

Speaker A:

It was a drug, it was a sales case.

Speaker A:

So when the.

Speaker A:

It's cover time, right?

Speaker A:

So when it happens, what happens is I get or because it's cold, they not really keeping nobody unless you like beating up your baby mama or like shooting, killing people, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

So they or me 72 hours.

Speaker A:

When I get out, I already know that, like I'm in Nevada.

Speaker A:

This how happened in Nevada?

Speaker A:

I'm in Nevada, I'm from the Bay Area.

Speaker A:

I got caught with a gun too.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, they finna try to throw me energy out here.

Speaker A:

I'm like, I gotta get.

Speaker A:

As soon as I got to her, we packed up all that, got the fuck up out of there, you know.

Speaker A:

And then we came back to California.

Speaker A:

Now, so I had saved up like a little head rich fortune at this time, like close to a hundred thousand.

Speaker A:

But that went away.

Speaker A:

I had.

Speaker A:

We was living in hotels and.

Speaker A:

And I'm.

Speaker A:

I ain't gonna lie, I stopped hustling, but I'm still getting high because I know I'm doing perks and all the.

Speaker A:

At the time, like I'm making a lot of money.

Speaker A:

I'm just.

Speaker A:

I'm off.

Speaker A:

I got a bad drug habit too.

Speaker A:

At the same time, it's crucial.

Speaker A:

Like I'm spending like 500 a day on pills, but I'm making so much money it don't even matter, right?

Speaker A:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And it's bad for that.

Speaker A:

So now I'm just off all the money because I gotta stay in hotels.

Speaker A:

I need to get high still before.

Speaker A:

Before I get sick or whatever, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

So mind you, they.

Speaker A:

It takes like 12 months for them to file, you know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

11 to 12 months for them to file.

Speaker A:

I have another warrant out at the time.

Speaker A:

Me and her is doordashing.

Speaker A:

Let me see if this water real quick.

Speaker A:

I don't have a license.

Speaker A:

I had a license in years.

Speaker A:

She tired of driving.

Speaker A:

We've been on the road for the Last month, who knows?

Speaker A:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

So I'm driving.

Speaker A:

We get pulled over because we don't have a front license plate, right?

Speaker A:

It's in the window, but it's not on the front.

Speaker A:

That's what.

Speaker A:

She just was bored.

Speaker A:

I already know.

Speaker A:

She's like, you got license?

Speaker A:

I'm like, nope.

Speaker A:

She's like, what's your name?

Speaker A:

Remember now?

Speaker A:

I'm like, I.

Speaker A:

I'm.

Speaker A:

I don't know exactly what warrant I have.

Speaker A:

I'm like.

Speaker A:

But I could feel it, like at this moment in that.

Speaker A:

That time of my life, I was living with warrants, multiple warrants, all the time.

Speaker A:

Like it was normal.

Speaker A:

So, like, getting pulled over by the police wasn't my option.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, no.

Speaker A:

I'm like, here we go.

Speaker A:

She come back.

Speaker A:

She's like, yeah, you got a warrant?

Speaker A:

It's a different case out of another county, right?

Speaker A:

That I've been.

Speaker A:

Had a warrant for it.

Speaker A:

So they pick me up on that.

Speaker A:

Or they had just filed or something, who knows?

Speaker A:

But I had been on the run from.

Speaker A:

I had left that from the other case, if this all makes sense.

Speaker A:

Yeah, I caught that.

Speaker A:

I had got.

Speaker A:

Went down for the other case.

Speaker A:

They hadn't filed.

Speaker A:

You you see?

Speaker A:

I'm saying.

Speaker A:

So I left on that one from that state, came back, they had filed on the other.

Speaker A:

The charge they probably had been waiting to file on.

Speaker A:

And then they got me like that I had ended up bailing out at the police station.

Speaker A:

I didn't even make it through extradition or nothing because I was supposed to go to another county.

Speaker A:

This hella far.

Speaker A:

And so when I get on, like, I gotta do something.

Speaker A:

Like, I can't just show up to all these court cases with my life the way it is.

Speaker A:

Like, you feel me?

Speaker A:

I'm like, I'm on drugs.

Speaker A:

You can clearly tell I'm on drugs, too.

Speaker A:

Like, it's not a secret.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, all right, I'm gonna go to rehab, and then we'll figure it out from there.

Speaker A:

Let me get clean first.

Speaker A:

Let me make that the first step.

Speaker A:

So I go to rehab and I do three months.

Speaker A:

But I'm cutting everybody into rehab.

Speaker A:

I have my pops, he's.

Speaker A:

He dropped me off some Walmart clippers.

Speaker A:

That's it.

Speaker A:

Just the clipper, though, not the liners, nothing.

Speaker A:

There was some Gars and some cigarettes is what he gave me, I remember.

Speaker A:

And I've been cutting myself in there and cutting all of, like, the people in there, even some of the people that worked there.

Speaker A:

I was cutting them, and by the end of it, you know, you get an exit plan, and they're like, you know, Mike, that's my real name.

Speaker A:

They're like, if when you leave up out of here, you have a great head on your shoulders, you very smart.

Speaker A:

Like, you have.

Speaker A:

You're very talented.

Speaker A:

You know, you're good at doing a lot of different things.

Speaker A:

You articulate.

Speaker A:

Your sky's the limit for you if you just stay on the right track.

Speaker A:

I'm like, yeah, I know, but I've been hearing that all my life.

Speaker A:

So I'm like, yeah, whatever.

Speaker A:

But they're like, bro, for real.

Speaker A:

Make an exit plan.

Speaker A:

They're like, you should go back to barber school.

Speaker A:

Because you said you've been to barber school before, and we seen you could hear you good.

Speaker A:

It couldn't hear.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

I'm like.

Speaker A:

They're like, you know what?

Speaker A:

Call them.

Speaker A:

Call them tomorrow.

Speaker A:

I'm like, all right.

Speaker A:

Because at this time, I'm like in the headspace where I'm like, I'm willing to do whatever to save my life, because I'm.

Speaker A:

I already know I'm looking at, like, anywhere from, like, five to ten years for show in Nevada by itself.

Speaker A:

I'm not really worried too much about the other case.

Speaker A:

I know they're gonna just give me a little slap with the.

Speaker A:

The one for the drugs.

Speaker A:

And again, I'm stressing about that, so I'm like, all right, all right.

Speaker A:

Because they haven't even filed yet, but I know I'm on borrowed time, so I.

Speaker A:

I ended up calling them.

Speaker A:

I enrolled back.

Speaker A:

Mind you, they don't know it's me from the last time.

Speaker A:

And I didn't even tell y' all how bad I was at that school last.

Speaker A:

The first time.

Speaker A:

I was selling heron in there.

Speaker A:

I was selling meth in there.

Speaker A:

Damn.

Speaker A:

Feel me?

Speaker A:

I had knocks coming in, like, trading me PlayStation Threes and, like, on some real knock shit, like, in front of everybody, like.

Speaker A:

Like they knew what was going on.

Speaker A:

But, like, they were at the time, they were so busy trying to make sure their school was staying afloat because it was so new and they were trying to get accredited by fafsa.

Speaker A:

So they're not even.

Speaker A:

They're kind of, like, letting slide, and I'm pushing the envelope hard.

Speaker A:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

Hard.

Speaker A:

But they're letting me go.

Speaker A:

And then eventually I ended up getting drops.

Speaker A:

They're like, thank God I don't tell them it's me.

Speaker A:

They don't realize it's me.

Speaker A:

So I Get back in row.

Speaker A:

So when I.

Speaker A:

When I finally get up out of there a week later, I start in barber school.

Speaker A:

And then the first day, the director sees me, and we have mask on, because it's post Covid.

Speaker A:

Like, we can be around each other, but you got how to mask on, remember?

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker A:

And she's like, hey, pull your mask on.

Speaker A:

I'm like.

Speaker A:

And I know.

Speaker A:

I know who she is, right?

Speaker A:

And I'm smiling already because I know who she is.

Speaker A:

And she was like.

Speaker A:

She says my name.

Speaker A:

You know what I'm saying?

Speaker A:

She was like, we gonna have problems this time?

Speaker A:

I'm like, nah.

Speaker A:

And I told her what.

Speaker A:

Like, what I've been.

Speaker A:

I just finished rehab.

Speaker A:

My beverage.

Speaker A:

I just finished rehab, and I.

Speaker A:

I'm here to do it different this time.

Speaker A:

She's like, all right, cool.

Speaker A:

And then she was, I'm gonna give you another chance.

Speaker A:

Cause I really.

Speaker A:

If you didn't say what you just said, I really don't want to let you come back.

Speaker A:

And I was like, it's good.

Speaker A:

Like, I get it.

Speaker A:

You know what I mean?

Speaker A:

I deserve that.

Speaker A:

But thank you, you know what I mean?

For the opportunity.

Speaker A:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And then, you know, I do my thing at barber school, and.

Speaker A:

And the crazy thing is, I almost didn't finish again.

Speaker A:

Because now I'm telling you, I'm on borrowed time, right?

Speaker A:

We're like, maybe I have, like, a month left, but before I graduate, we go to the club.

Speaker A:

I remember I was already working in the shop.

Speaker A:

It was a Saturday.

Speaker A:

My boy called me.

Speaker A:

He like, let's go to the club.

Speaker A:

We go.

Speaker A:

Fight happened outside.

Speaker A:

Whatever.

Speaker A:

The police pull up, we get.

Speaker A:

They run my name.

Speaker A:

They say, you know, you a felony fugitive.

Speaker A:

I'm.

Speaker A:

I'm already knowing.

Speaker A:

I could just feel it.

Speaker A:

Even though I didn't know if they had filed for sure or not.

Speaker A:

But I just said, I can feel it right now.

Speaker A:

It's going to be the time.

Speaker A:

Like, everything's going way too good.

Speaker A:

I'm already making money in school, booked out, working at the shop and doing school all at the same time.

Speaker A:

I'm like, it's going way too good.

Speaker A:

I already know.

Speaker A:

Yep, take me.

Speaker A:

Boom.

Speaker A:

I know that Reno has to come pick me up because the case is out there.

Speaker A:

I call, I talk to the school.

Speaker A:

When my girl talks to the school, they're like, the thing is, is they had just got.

Speaker A:

The hours had just got reduced at the school to less than what I.

Speaker A:

I'm supposed to do.

Speaker A:

But now the curriculum is different.

Speaker A:

So now FAFSA has Changed the rules.

Speaker A:

You can't go and leave absences loas.

Speaker A:

Before you could do that, I could have really just took like, I need two months loa to make sure I don't miss no school.

Speaker A:

But now you have only two weeks before you can come back.

Speaker A:

And it just had.

Speaker A:

Just went into effect, right?

Speaker A:

Like a week before I got arrested.

Speaker A:

So like now I'm in a rock and a hard place, right?

Speaker A:

She's like, you have two weeks to get back.

Speaker A:

And that's all I can do.

Speaker A:

And I'm like, okay.

Speaker A:

I.

Speaker A:

When Reno.

Speaker A:

Look, when Reno tell you they coming to get you, the day they say they gonna be there, they.

Speaker A:

They be there because they like, they like we gonna be there on this day.

Speaker A:

It's literally two days before I need to be back in school.

Speaker A:

They already telling me, the lawyers and, and even Reno when they pick me up, they're like, oh yeah, you have a bail.

Speaker A:

If you, you got the money on your books, you can bail out when you get there.

Speaker A:

I already had put the money on the books because I knew that.

Speaker A:

So she had.

Speaker A:

My girl had put some money on the books.

Speaker A:

I get there, I bail out as soon as I get there.

Speaker A:

I only sit there for like eight hours, maybe 12.

Speaker A:

I forget.

Speaker A:

It sucked.

Speaker A:

I know that much.

Speaker A:

Then I ride the greyhound back to sack the next day.

Speaker A:

I get to Sack at like one o' clock.

Speaker A:

My boy that I got arrested with, well, he didn't get arrested, but I was with when I got arrested.

Speaker A:

He feels so bad for taking me to the club and he can pick me up from Sack.

Speaker A:

The teachers let him leave too, because they know that he coming to get me because he's supposed to be at school.

Speaker A:

Yeah, he gets us.

Speaker A:

We.

Speaker A:

He made me a psych at one.

Speaker A:
